Saving Lei Lani: My Baby Needed My Help

I’m a great lover of animals. I’m one of those people who would happily declare that I get along far better with animals than people. To me, they carry a great sense of peace that we humans are always searching for.

My sweet kitty Lei Lani was a street rescue born of feral parents in Hawaii. She popped her sweet little face out of my now ex-husband’s shirt, and I was instantly hooked. When we moved back to San Francisco, of course, she was coming with us. The airline staff never even noticed her inside what looked like a simple black carry-on bag. The sedative her vet prescribed helped her sleep, and no one was the wiser.

So when she became ill with diabetes, there was no question at all that I would do everything in my power to save her. She wasn’t eating, was constantly thirsty, and the litter box looked like a swimming pool. The initial vet said she needed to be rushed to urgent care. When we got to the emergency pet hospital, they were gravely worried about her. They thought her kidneys were failing and had to keep her for a few days.

If you know anything about feral cats and Tortoiseshells in particular, you’d know they are pretty much one-owner types and don’t take much to strangers. So the staff had their hands full trying to handle her. She responded instantly when I called out to her, with an “I’m here, Mom” cry. I recall one attendant proclaiming, “NOW you’re all sweet and cuddles now that Mommy is here!

During our first days apart, while they were trying to stabilize her, I would meditate as usual. My preferred method is Wayne Dyer’s “I AM” Sound Meditation. Anyone who’s done much meditation knows that each time is usually unique, but this special morning I will never forget. Being particularly emotional, worrying about my little sweetie during my meditation, I began to picture her in her cage at the vet’s office. I could so vividly see myself walking up to the cage in the dimly lit room. I could hear her meow to me as I approached. As I reached her cage, I began to imagine a healing light glowing inside the cage. It was hovering at the top, and I asked it to move down into her body, sending her all my Love and healing thoughts with it. There are times when meditation is SO magical, SO REAL, SO true in your heart. When we harness our emotions and connect to source, we can have truly astonishing results.

The next day, the vet said she’d suddenly turned a corner and was recovering nicely. She came home the next day, insulin and testing strips in tow. The relief and gratitude I felt were indescribable. The feeling washed over me like a flush of soothing joy. I’ll never know for sure if it was the meditation or the $6k in medical expenses, but my heart tells me the universe was with me and helped save my precious little one.
